Why Reasons for Leaving Matter When Hiring New Employees

Tim Hardie • July 11, 2019

Whenever we conduct reference checks or employment verifications, we always ask why a candidate left their previous employer.

Was it simply the end of their contract? Did they find a new opportunity for career growth? Did they move to be closer to home?

Or, were they dismissed for poor performance? Were they involved in sexual harassment? Did they steal from their employer?

Baycrest Hospital, located in Toronto, hired a third-party internal investigator to find out which employees were committing fraud by abusing their employee benefits. The investigation uncovered that many unionized employees within the hospital were misusing their benefits involving orthotics, orthopedic shoes, compression stocking, and braces. Approximately 150 employees were fired once they uncovered the multimillion-dollar scheme.

Protect Yourself

Assessing a candidate’s previous employment history will usually uncover a pattern - maybe you have candidates that regularly hop jobs or candidates that have only left their old companies to move onto better opportunities.

By verifying a candidate’s reasons for leaving, you can get a greater understanding of any performance-related issues they have had in the past. Protect your company - do your research to make an informed hiring decision.
